Buyer pays shipping or free shipping?

If the buyer pays shipping, Mercari's 10% is charged on the shipping too, but the buyer covers the label. If you offer free shipping, the fee is only on the item price, but the label cost comes out of your earnings. For a $25 item with a $7.99 label: if the buyer pays shipping, the fee is 10% × $32.99 = $3.30 and you keep $21.70; with free shipping, the fee is $2.50 but you also pay the $7.99 label, so you keep $14.51. Free shipping can sell faster, so switch the option above to compare both on your own item.

Example

An item sells for $40 and the buyer pays $8 shipping. The selling fee is 10% × $48 = $4.80. The buyer also pays a Buyer Protection fee of 3.6% × $48 = $1.73, which doesn't come out of your earnings.

Does Mercari charge its fee on shipping?

Yes, when the buyer pays shipping the 10% is charged on the item price plus that shipping. If you offer free shipping, the fee is on the item price only, but you pay the label.

It's 3.6% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, paid by the buyer at checkout. It doesn't reduce your earnings.
